I have a rule to not play any Christmas music until December 1. When I finally decide to listen to some holiday tunes, I'm very particular with what I'll play (and it's free of Mariah Carey).
Here is a list of my favourite Christmas songs:
Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid
There are a few versions of this song, but nothing beats the original 1984 version.
Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy - Bing Crosby & David Bowie
This duet featuring Bing Crosby (who is basically synonymous with Christmas songs) and David Bowie has always been one of my favourites.
Christmas in Hollis - Run DMC
You may not think of rap when you think of Christmas songs, but Christmas in Hollis is one of the best non-traditional Christmas tunes ever made.
Mele Kalikimaka - Bing Crosby
The tropical vibes of this song always makes me long for warmer weather during the holidays.
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - U2
I grew up being a U2 fan, so it's no surprise that I've always loved this song.
Happy Xmas (War is Over) - John Lennon
This is not the happiest Christmas song, especially with its anti-war sentiment, but it's John Lennon and you just can't hate a John Lennon song. Am I wrong?
Christmas Time Is Here - Vince Guaraldi Trio
My sister Katherine has always had an obsession with Peanuts, so A Charlie Brown Christmas was a staple in our house growing up.
Feliz Navidad - José Feliciano
There's something so fun and festive about this song. It has always made me happy when I hear it.
Last Christmas - Wham!
OK. I know this song is totally cheesy, but this child of the 80s loves it.
Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo - South Park
Last, but not least, we have one of the grossest holiday songs you'll probably ever hear. This song from South Park about everyone's favourite holiday turd makes me laugh every time I hear it.
